RakaCups developed a custom double-wall stainless steel coffee mug with a wooden handle and wooden lid for an approximately 50,000-piece order from an anonymous coffee chain brand. The project focused on improving the durability of the handle connection by reducing reliance on adhesive alone.
Project at a Glance
- Client: Coffee chain brand (anonymous)
- Product: Double-wall stainless steel coffee mug
- Customization: Wooden handle and wooden lid
- Order quantity: Approximately 50,000 pieces
- Core challenge: Creating a more durable connection between the wooden handle and stainless steel cup body
Project Background
The customer required a custom stainless steel coffee mug that combined a double-wall metal body with natural wooden components. In addition to the visual design, the handle connection needed to be suitable for a large OEM production order.
RakaCups coordinated the product-development communication for the project. Manufacturing support was provided through Yongkang Moka Metal Products Factory in Yongkang, Zhejiang, China.
The Manufacturing Challenge
Wooden handles are commonly attached to stainless steel mugs with adhesive. Over time, an adhesive-only connection may weaken, creating a risk that the handle becomes loose or separates from the cup body.
For an order of approximately 50,000 pieces, the attachment method also needed to be repeatable in production and clear for quality inspection.
Our R&D Solution
The RakaCups R&D team worked with its wooden-component manufacturing partner to redesign the internal structure of the handle connection.
Metal inserts were welded to the double-wall stainless steel cup body. The redesigned wooden handle then connected through a stronger mechanical attachment, rather than relying only on adhesive.

Engineering Outcome
The approved design used a welded metal insert and a mechanical handle connection. This reduced dependence on adhesive alone and provided a clearer, more secure attachment structure for the approximately 50,000-piece OEM project.

Quality-Control Focus for This Design
For a wood-handle stainless steel mug, the most important inspection points include:
- alignment of the wooden handle with the cup body;
- security and consistency of the mechanical attachment;
- fit of the wooden lid;
- surface-finish consistency on the stainless steel body and wooden components;
- packaging protection for the handle and lid during transport.
These points help buyers define an inspection standard before mass production.

Why This Case Matters for OEM Buyers
This project shows that customization is not limited to colors, logos and packaging. When a design combines stainless steel with wood, the connection structure can directly affect product durability and production consistency.
For large private-label orders, buyers should confirm the attachment method, sample approval standard and critical inspection points before mass production begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can RakaCups customize stainless steel mugs with wooden handles?
Yes. RakaCups supports OEM and private-label stainless steel drinkware projects that may include custom handles, lids, colors, finishes, logos and packaging, subject to project review.
What was the approximate order size in this case study?
The project involved approximately 50,000 pieces.
Why use a mechanical attachment instead of adhesive alone?
A mechanical attachment can reduce reliance on adhesive and provide a more defined connection between the wooden handle and the stainless steel cup body.
Who handled the manufacturing?
The project was supported by Yongkang Moka Metal Products Factory in Yongkang, Zhejiang, China, with RakaCups coordinating the OEM project communication.
